Meet Our People: Matthew Gordon (Matty G)

Matthew Gordon (Matty G) – Parts Interpreter

If there’s one thing you can count on at SG Equipment, it’s that a Gordon will be involved somewhere — and in Matty’s case, he’s both the “baby” of the family and the longest-serving of the three siblings in the business.

Matty’s journey with SG began straight out of school in 2017, when he jumped into the workshop to kick-start his career. About 18 months later, a short-staffed Parts Department meant a new opportunity, and Matty found himself moved into the role he still holds today.

As a Parts Interpreter, Matty’s days are filled with responding to dealers and customers, organising parts for the mechanics, and keeping the whole operation flowing smoothly behind the scenes. He admits his favourite part of the job is putting together quotes for SG’s big customers, and considering his speed, accuracy, and strong product knowledge, it’s no surprise he’s become the go-to guy for it. Over the years he’s gained his MPI training, completed his Parts Certificate, and even taken on extra responsibilities like managing Trade Me Sales.

Working in a family business definitely has its moments. According to Matty, the recurring theme among the Gordon crew is the daily debate: “What’s for lunch?” As for being the youngest, it doesn’t come with any special privileges — “I still get bossed around,” he laughs.

One of Matty’s standout memories with SG Equipment is celebrating the company’s 30-year anniversary, a milestone that highlights how far the business has come. He’s also particularly proud of the work he does with the Talleys Group, helping manage big orders and ensuring their sites receive the correct parts and support they need to keep moving.

Outside of work, Matty enjoys winding down with a couple of cold beverages and watching rugby union and league. A simple, solid Kiwi weekend.

As for what he loves most about being part of SG Equipment, Matty says it’s being part of a team that feels like family — both literally and figuratively. And his advice for anyone thinking about a career in parts or the forklift industry? Be ready to learn fast, stay organised, and don’t underestimate how important the right part at the right time can be.
